As the daughter of a military family, I became accustomed to new beginnings. Every few years meant another move, another first day at another school, another classroom where everyone else seemed to know one another. I remember wondering where to sit, hoping someone would say hello, and quietly wondering what this new school would hold for me.

Years later, as the parent of three boys, I experienced those first days from a different perspective. I watched each of them begin kindergarten with excitement, navigate the transition to middle school, and eventually walk into high school with growing confidence and new dreams for the future. Like every parent, I hoped they would be welcomed, challenged, encouraged and inspired to discover talents they didn’t yet know they possessed. Those experiences have shaped the way I think about the beginning of every school year.

Every August, students walk through our schoolhouse doors carrying more than backpacks. They carry hopes, questions, aspirations and sometimes burdens that are invisible to those around them. Some arrive eager to reconnect with friends. Others enter a new school or a new community wondering where they will fit. Some carry the weight of housing insecurity, food insecurity, anxiety or family challenges. For many students, school provides stability, caring relationships and opportunities they may not find anywhere else. Yet despite their different journeys, every student arrives with something in common: the hope that this year will be filled with new possibilities.

That is the enduring promise of public education.

Public education has always represented more than classrooms and curriculum. It is a promise that every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow and discover their unique gifts. It is a promise that circumstances should never define a student’s future. It is a promise that schools can open doors to opportunities students may not yet imagine for themselves, while preparing them to become engaged citizens, lifelong learners and contributors to their communities.

Promises, however, require stewardship. Long before the first bell rings, governance teams have been preparing for this moment. Boards have adopted budgets, invested in safe and modern learning environments, supported professional learning, established priorities and advocated for the resources schools need to serve students well. These are not simply operational responsibilities; they are the decisions that create the conditions for learning and shape the experiences students have from the moment they step onto campus.

As governance leaders, our responsibility is to ensure that the promise of public education becomes a reality for every student. That means keeping students at the center of every decision. It means adopting policies that expand opportunities rather than creating barriers. It means supporting the whole child by recognizing that academic success is strengthened when students feel safe, healthy, connected and inspired. It means investing in excellent educators and creating learning environments where innovation, curiosity, creativity and critical thinking can flourish. And it means paying particular attention to those students who face the greatest challenges, ensuring that every learner has access to the opportunities they need to thrive.

Every policy we adopt, every budget we approve, every partnership we build and every advocacy effort we undertake should ultimately answer one question: Will this open more doors for students?

Every new school year also gives us something else; a chance to renew our own perspective. It invites us to celebrate what is working, to honestly examine where barriers remain, and to ask whether our schools are meeting the evolving needs of today’s learners. It challenges us to lead with humility, curiosity and purpose, recognizing that stewardship is not about preserving the status quo but about ensuring every student is prepared for the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.

As I begin my 24th school year as a trustee, I continue to feel a deep sense of gratitude for the privilege of serving California’s students and communities. Each August reminds me that public education is one of our state’s greatest investments; not simply because of what students learn in school, but because of the lives they are empowered to build beyond it.

I still think about that little girl walking into another new school, wondering what opportunities might be waiting behind those classroom doors.

This month, millions of California students will walk through those same doors with that same sense of hope. Our responsibility is to ensure those doors open wide: to opportunity, to possibility and to a future where every student can discover their potential.

That is the promise of a new beginning.

And that is the enduring promise of public education.
