Start strong: Essential training for newly elected school board members
With more than 2,300 school board seats up for election across California in November 2024, with hundreds going to first-time trustees, a new wave of leadership will be shaping the future of public education. To help new governance team members succeed in their first 180 days, CSBA offers a comprehensive training program to equip them with the knowledge and skills needed to govern effectively and support student achievement.
Why training matters
Many newly elected trustees bring fresh perspectives but may lack familiarity with the laws, processes and responsibilities of school board governance. Effective trusteeship is critical for aligning district goals, fostering collaboration and ensuring that decisions benefit students. That’s why CSBA has developed a New Board Member Training Bundle, combining essential training courses at a reduced rate so these trustees can start off on the right foot.
CSBA’s New Board Member Training Bundle
For just $999, this bundle includes four vital training sessions:
- Orientation for New Trustees: This eight-hour foundational course provides the tools to understand governance roles, foster collaboration and make informed decisions that drive student success.
- The Brown Act: Gain a clear understanding of the open meetings law, ensuring transparency, compliance and confidence in fulfilling your legal responsibilities.
- Ethics: Assembly Bill 2158: Fulfill the state-mandated ethics training requirement under AB 2158 while building a solid foundation of integrity and accountability.
- Fiscal Responsibility: Key Financial Concepts for New Board Members: Learn to navigate budgets, prioritize resources and ensure accountability — key components of sound fiscal oversight.
A foundation for governance excellence
The Orientation for New Trustees also introduces the four pillars of governance: unity of purpose, clear roles and responsibilities, positive governance culture and supportive structures. This ensures new trustees are ready to work collaboratively with their superintendent and fellow trustees to set vision and policy while respecting operational boundaries.
Charting a clear path
Beyond the training bundle, CSBA’s Masters in Governance® program offers ongoing professional development opportunities with advanced training in student achievement, policy, finance and more. By participating in these programs, new board members will continue building expertise to support their local educational agencies effectively.
