CSBA’s District and County Office of Education Legal Services team recently partnered with LexisNexis to publish the 2022 edition of California Education Laws and Regulations — a resource that will soon become a go-to legal reference for CSBA members, school administrators, education attorneys and K-12 educational professionals throughout California.

LexisNexis — a global data and analytics company that provides one of the premier online legal research platforms in the world and is a leading publisher of legal reference books — produced a book of education laws in 2021. The original publication included portions of the Education Code along other statutes related to K-12 education, but it didn’t encompass the entire range of legal issues that board members face.

From a legal perspective, the world of education is much greater than Local Control and Accountability Plans, the Local Control Funding Formula and Common Core. Local educational agencies and their governing boards deal with everything from curriculum, special education, facilities and finance to torts, discrimination and the Family Medical Leave Act.

“LexisNexis is excited to partner with CSBA to develop this comprehensive reference set covering California education law.”

“As far as what they have to comply with, LEAs are essentially micro-states charged with a wide array of laws,” says Bob Tuerck, CSBA Legal Service’s Chief Legal Counsel. “It is one of the things that makes practicing education law so interesting for attorneys, and so challenging for educators.”

California Education Laws and Regulations is a comprehensive, three volume compilation of statutes, codes and regulations from all areas of law that touch K-12 education in California.

When LexisNexis approached CSBA about collaborating on this publication, it seemed liked a natural fit. The project brings CSBA’s expertise together with the power of LexisNexis to create something of unique value for anyone involved in K-12 education.

“LexisNexis is excited to partner with CSBA to develop this comprehensive reference set covering California Education Law. We greatly value CSBA’s domain expertise in developing what we believe is an essential tool for anyone who practices education law in the state,” said Anders Ganten, senior director of Government, Corrections & Alliances at LexisNexis.

This collaboration also gives CSBA another opportunity to bring value to its members, particularly for Legal Services clients.
